Before you hire a roofer in Glasgow
Roofing attracts more doorstep scams than any other trade. A few simple rules protect you.
Never hire from the doorstep
Trading Standards and Police Scotland regularly warn about cold callers who point out a slipped slate and ask for cash up front. A good roofer does not need to knock on doors. Get at least two written quotes.
Ask for photos of the problem
Most roofers will send photos of what they find before and after a repair. If someone will not show you, ask why.
Know the Glasgow rules
- Tenement roofs are usually shared by every owner in the close. Under the Tenements (Scotland) Act 2004, a majority of owners can agree repairs and share the cost.
- Scaffolding or a skip on the pavement or road needs a permit from Glasgow City Council. Your roofer should arrange it and include it in the quote.
- Listed buildings and conservation areas may need permission before you change roof materials. Keeping natural slate is usually the safe choice.
