The only locksmith on our shortlist we could confirm on the Master Locksmiths Association directory, which vets, inspects and tests its members. It is also an Auto Locksmiths Association member, so it suits car and van key work. It has fewer reviews than the firms above, with a 4.9 from 25 on Trusted Trader.

Good firms that missed out on this edition
We built a long list from Google Maps, Checkatrade, the Trusted Trader scheme and the Master Locksmiths Association directory, then checked 18 firms in depth. Each got a score out of ten from the checks on the right. The table is that score, highest first.
Locksmiths have no legal licensing scheme in the UK. Full marks on our second check go only to firms we confirmed on the Master Locksmiths Association directory. Responsiveness has not been tested yet; scores are based on the other three checks, scaled to ten.
Volume and average rating on the main platform, plus credit for strong reviews on a second platform.
Full marks for MLA membership we confirmed ourselves. Independent vetting, named qualifications and background checks score less.
Years trading, backed by Companies House or a membership date. Points come off for overdue filings.
Most people look for a locksmith in a panic, which is exactly when rogue firms catch them out. Save a good number now.
Some online ads quote a low call out fee, then add large charges on the doorstep. Ask for the total price, including VAT and parts, before any work begins.
A skilled locksmith can open most standard locks without drilling. If someone wants to drill straight away, ask why.
In our 2026 table, Liberty Locksmiths comes top, with 7.5 out of 10 and a perfect 5.0 from 913 Google reviews. Five firms share the top score, so it is worth looking at LKC Locksmiths, Access Lock Co, Barrhead Lock & Door Co and Marlie Locksmiths too.
Locksmiths have no official register, and only one firm on our shortlist appeared on the Master Locksmiths Association directory, so most score lower on our second check.
No. Nobody can buy a place in the table. Some firms pay to be on Checkatrade, but that only counts here because Checkatrade checks identity, insurance and references.
